Our Organization

Global Youth Empowerment (GYE) began operations on June 11, 2001. We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation registered in the state of New Jersey. We are affiliated with our Ghanaian NGO (non-government organization), Without Borders.  Our Board of Directors is totally dedicated to the cause and actively involved in its realization. We meet regularly as a board to discuss GYE's progress and set goals for the upcoming weeks. In addition, we have approximately 30 active supporters who volunteer their services.  Global Youth Empowerment currently does not incur any employment expenses as all the work is done on a volunteer basis.  We are committed to maintaining low administrative overhead and making the most of every dollar contributed.

Our Projects

The current project involves building a primary school near the town of Ho, located in the Volta Region of Ghana. This area is in need of an extraordinary educational institution that will help to empower and bring opportunities to children of Ho. With the help and support of the people in Ho, and the support of sister communities here in America, our aim is to have the school completed and operational by 2005. The school will serve children in grades 1 through 8 and help them to develop effective reading, writing and mathematical skills, as well as knowledge of various world cultures.

In the future, we hope to provide secondary education facilities to the children of Ho, Ghana. In addition, we aim to build schools in different regions of the world where educational facilities are greatly needed.

Fundraising

Our main source of fundraising has been to sell the handicrafts of the people of Ghana. This allows the people of the community to contribute to the cause and it empowers them to make use of their talents. In selling their products, we teach them about various skills needed to conduct business. We have been selling Ghanaian oil paintings, music, wood carvings, and drums.

In addition to selling African handicrafts we have also been holding events such as public presentations, art exhibits, etc. We hope to continue in these efforts and create other strategies for fundraising in the future. Our current source of fundraising relies heavily on working with the Ghanaian people and empowering them by selling their art work.

Financial Needs

At the present time, the land where the primary school near Ho will be built has been paid in full.  We have six plots of land that will be used for the construction of the primary school. The total cost of the land was $4,850.00.  Our current efforts are dedicated to raising the necessary funds to construct the building. The current estimated cost for the materials and labor to build the school and to run it for the first year is $50,000.
