Building a Primary School in Ho
|
The current project involves building a primary school just outside the town of Ho, located in the Volta Region of Ghana. This
area is in need of an extraordinary educational institution that will help to empower and bring opportunities to
children of Ho. With the help and support of the people in Ho, and the support of sister communities here in America,
our aim is to have the school operational by early 2005. The school will serve children in grades
1 through 8 and help them to develop effective reading, writing and mathematical skills, as well as knowledge of various
world cultures.
Under the current project, we also focus on establishing cultural connections between students in elementary schools in
New Jersey and children in Ho. These connections will come in the form of written letters, email exchanges, and
photographs. Through these connections, children from both cultures can learn about one another and develop a respect
for cultural diversity and an understanding of different cultures around the world. By communicating via the letters and
the internet, African children will be able to develop their writing skills and become familiar with different forms of
world communication.
In addition to personal exchanges between children from both parts of the world, an educational unit will be designed to
teach about the lives of children in these very different parts of the world. American children will be taught about
life in Ghana and Ghanaian children will be taught about life for their American friends. This will allow children to
better understand their new friends and increase their cultural awareness.
Lastly, the current project aims to build ties between people here in America and overseas in Ghana. Through emotional
and financial support, American communities can help to transform the communities neighboring the town of Ho. In
addition, lifelong bonds of friendship across waters can be established.
